2002   Rescuers bore a 30-inch shaft through 240 feet of rock in order to sucessfully reach nine coal miners, trapped for more than 74 hours, from a flooded mine in Somerset, Pennsylvania.
 
1993 The European principality of Andorra is admitted to the United Nations.
 
1991 The 15th perfect game in major league baseball history is pitched by Dennis Martinez, as his Montreal Expos beat the L.A. Dodgers, 2-0.

Grank Funk Railroad: Phoenix (Capitol)
Grand Funk Railroad finishes recording vocal overdubs for the song Rock & Roll Soul, which would appear on their Phoenix album.
